Fathers’ Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children. Although it is celebrated on various dates worldwide, many countries including India observe this day on the third Sunday in the month of June.

The significance of Father’s Day is related directly to the position of a father in the family as well as in the society, although, it is very much true that father together with mother has been equally responsible in the well being of the family.

The word 'Father' is often used to honor spiritual leaders, inventors and originator of an idea, service, product or person. It is so, that fathers have always been related with supervision and protection, as the person who can be loved, respected and looked up to. So do not forget to make Father’s day more special!

History of Father's Day:

Even though, the origin of father’s day is shrouded in vagueness and supposition, it is a general held belief that it commenced in Washington.

The person responsible for its origin is Sonora Smart Dodd who held her father in high esteem. It was her father who despite all odds raised her and her siblings, after the death of Sonora’s mother. In the eyes of Sonora, her father was a brave, a loving and a great man.

She was so touched by his generosity and selflessness that she decided to pay tribute to her hero, her father. She chose to celebrate father’s day on 19th of June 1910; her father’s birthday. Thus, it was Sonora Smart Dodd, who triggered the idea of having an official day for the observance of father’s day. After a gap of 3 years a bill was produced and the day was made official. However, Father’s day was not given much importance then and in fact, it was received with much mockery. It was only after forty six years that the day was given recognition and the then President, declared the third Sunday of June as an official day to celebrate Father’s Day.
