It is bound in wire and propped with iron rods, then buried in the ground up to the mouth of the mould, in a firm upright position. The hot liquid metal is poured into it and left to cool gradually. When fully cooled, the mould is broken open exposing the rough metal image. The finishing stage is begun where the rough statue is chiseled, filed, and engraved to reach the fine ornamental standard.

The History, The Legend:
The king and his wife commissioned the Sthapathi to make a tall and appealing Lord Nataraja statue of temple quality in 5- metals.
Sthapathi is an artisan who makes icons, with the required quantity and quality of metals as outlined in the ancient scriptures.
The Sthapathi, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, was very happy with the King’s order and set to work. The king was not happy with the first attempt. Nor was he happy with the next 3 attempts and rejected them all. The king gave the Sthapathi a last chance ordering him to make a more appealing statue that was taller and appeared more alive. If the artisan failed this last time, the king was going to chop off his head.
The Sthapathi had only one day to fill the tall order. He prayed and prayed to Lord Shiva to make his work appealing to the king and was thinking about how to start casting the final Nataraja.
An old man and his wife approached him and asked for some water to quench their thirst. The Sthapathi was really stressed as his life was at stake here, to offer water and told them he had none. The old man asked him to offer something to drink as they had walked all the way in a sunny day. The Sthapathi lost his patience and said "If you really want to drink something, drink the molten metal".
The old man immediately took the pot and drank the molten metal giving a little to his wife. Before the Sthapathi realized what happened, there emerged two statues, one of large the Nataraja and other his wife Parvati.
The king walked into his workshop at the same time and was extremely happy to see the statues. The Sthapathi was speechless. God had come himself out of infinite love and compassion to make the statues and save his life.
Sthapathi conveyed the whole incident to the king who called his tale a lie and raised his sword furiously. It struck the lifted right foot of the Nataraja. Blood spurted out and splashed on the King who developed leprosy. He became a believer.
The Nataraja here is believed to have the ability to cure all diseases.
